Sometimes it may take Knoppix a while to boot (its a Mac issue). You can also try booting a Knoppix Linux USB drive.
You could try looking at the system logs using "sudo dmesg" or "sudo journalctl". If a recent version of Ubuntu is freezing the laptop as well, then you likely have some sort of hardware issue.
